This class will consist of three virtual meetings, plus a paper written outside class hours. We will begin by learning the structure and the style elements behind a standard essay, formulate a central idea, learn how to find and vet source  material that supports each student’s thesis, discuss the differences among popular citation styles, make a bibliography, create multiple drafts, and get started on an essay. 

In the second class, each student will turn in a completed essay, which they will have written between the first and second class. We will have a timed essay, in which the students will be given a familiar topic, and asked to write a 5 paragraph, comparison essay in class.

 In the third and final class, both essays will be returned, graded, to the students, and we will discuss issues common across all papers. Students will also be taught how to tailor their writings to different purposes and audiences. 

Academic Fine-Print for Grownups:

This course offers students a structured, rigorous introduction to formal technical and academic writing tailored to prepare them for the demands of higher education. Through direct instruction, a take-home writing assignment, and a timed in-class essay, students will gain direct experience with the full writing cycle - from research and drafting to revision. Parents and educators can expect students to walk away with a stronger grasp of scholarly tone, source evaluation, and a head start on a portfolio of graded academic work for curriculum tracking.


Learning Goals

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Formulate & Support Strong Arguments: Construct clear thesis statements and back them up using vetted, academic source materials.

  2. Master Standard Citation Styles: Understand the differences between popular citation formats and correctly compile a working bibliography.

  3. Execute Under Timed Conditions: Plan, organize, and write a structured 5-paragraph comparative essay within a set timeframe.

  4. Tailor Writing to Audience & Purpose: Revise draft work using instructor feedback and adapt writing tone for various academic expectations.

Dates and Location:

Section A: Ages 12+ will meet Tuesdays from 9-11am Eastern, and will run from Tuesday, October 20, 2026 through Tuesday, November 3, 2026. All 3 classes will be held over Zoom.

Class Etiquette: I expect and require gentle, respectful language in my classes, and ask that all students come to class prepared to treat each other with kindness. These classes are a great opportunity for your kiddos to practice social/soft skills, with the underlying perspective that we’re all in this together.
